We are in hibernation…but set to line our tummies again on Saturday the 21st September 2019!!!

See you again then!

Sylvia’s is the meeting place for community, great coffee and awesome food.

We first opened our doors in 2015 on a spectacular sunny labour weekend and it has all been dreams come true since.

Sylvia (who is the owner and chef) is passionate about the world of hospitality and education. She has cooked in restaurants both in New Zealand and overseas including the latest at Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s ‘River Cottage’. It was here that she was able to refine her culinary skills, but also discovered she was coeliac…a chefs worst nightmare! A debated trip back to New Zealand landed her back in her home town of Port Waikato, where the dream ‘Sylvia’s’ was created.

“Learning I was coeliac was a shock and I wasn’t sure what to do with myself, but sometimes when life gives you lemons, you make really really really delicious lemonade. Having a cafe has given me the opportunity to combine my love for food, my knowledge of nutrition, my want for community and my passion for education all into one. This means I can share what I know about cooking and nutrition with others to help empower them, we get to create community evenings, show case musicians, and all done with the beach rolling at our doorstep. I’m definitely living the dream!”

We’re committed to sourcing excellent fresh ingredients as locally and sustainably as we can. You’ll find us using produce such as whitebait, honey, cheese, avocados, herbs and edible flowers from the local area, not to mention the bountiful extras the generous Port Waikato community donates from their pluming gardens. From these exceptional raw ingredients we are able to prepare, cook and bake almost EVERYTHING on site….yes even the bread and yoghurt. This means we can create a forever changing blackboard menu that reflects seasonality and creativity and we know (and now you know) that what we are producing is true, honest food…..just like how Grandma used to.

So join us on a couch or a table in the sun, or laze on a blanket in the garden. Come and respite, refuel, play a game, or merely relax at Sylvia’s.
